Reverse of Case
1. The R&E Co. trademark is cast on the reverse of the case in the center.
2. It appears that the case casting was changed while "PATENTS PENDING" was on the shackle.
Variety #1 has not been seen when the patent dates are on the shackle.
Shackle
1. "RUSSELL & ERWIN MFG. CO. NEW BRITAIN, CONN. U.S.A." is stamped on the obverse of the shackle.
2. Early padlocks have "PATENTS PENDING" stamped on the reverse of the shackle.
3. Later padlocks have "PAT.NOV.22.98. PAT.JAN.31.99." stamped on the reverse of the shackle.
4. The following have been seen stamped on the reverse of the shackle: "1", "2", "4", "6",
"8", "10", "11", "J1", "S", "S1", and "Z11".
